About Havana
Havana, the vibrant capital of Cuba, was founded by the Spanish in 1519 due to its strategic deep-water harbor. Historically, the city served as the primary gathering point for Spanish treasure fleets, earning it the title "Key to the New World." This wealth made it a target for pirates, leading to the construction of massive stone fortifications that still stand today. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, Havana is celebrated for its mix of Baroque architecture, vintage cars, and a resilient culture that has survived centuries of colonial rule and revolutionary change.
The city’s aviation history is centered on José Martí International Airport, which opened in 1930 to modernize Cuba’s global connections. A major milestone in aviation history occurred here in 1945, when the International Air Transport Association (IATA) was founded during a meeting in Havana. Following the Cuban Revolution, the airport was renamed to honor the national hero and poet José Martí. Today, it remains the island's busiest hub, serving as the primary gateway for millions of travelers entering the Caribbean.
